Eclipse is an extensible, open source IDE (integrated development environment).The stated goals of Eclipse are "to develop a robust, full-featured, commercial-quality industry platform for the development of highly integrated tools.The Eclipse platform, when combined with the JDT, offers many of the features you'd expect from a commercial-quality IDE: a syntax-highlighting editor, incremental code compilation, a thread-aware source-level debugger, a class navigator, a file/project manager, and interfaces to standard source control systems, such as CVS and ClearCase.
Eclipse also includes a number of unique features such as code refactoring, automatic code updates/installs (via the Update Manager), a task list, support for unit testing with JUnit, and integration with the Jakarta Ant build tool.
